Mushrooms, referral$ and more

Thanks to everyone who has signed up for the Local Food Box and helped find new box program members. We are looking forward to the start of the box program next month!

We still have spaces we would like to fill including in town pickups. If you haven’t signed up yet but would like to please register now.  If you know anyone you think might be interested, check out our new referral promotion below. Also, we are really excited to be able to offer a new Local Food Box product: Mushrooms!

Metchosin-grown mushrooms from West Coast Mycology

We are very pleased to be partnering with West Coast Mycology to offer weekly mushrooms in The Local Food Box. West Coast Mycology is a small, gourmet mushroom farm run by a husband and wife team in the heart of Metchosin, BC. Together they cultivate a variety of delicious, nutritious, and regenerative mushrooms, including oyster and lion’s mane. West Coast Mycology mushrooms are grown on Metchosin-grown and milled organic wheat bran. You can choose to receive weekly Oyster, Lion’s Mane or mixed mushrooms at $10 per half pound/ $200 for the season. To add mushrooms to your order please login to your OFN account or send us an email letting us know which option you would like to add on.

Local Food Box start date

We are planning to start the first week of pickups the week of June 5.  The first Vic West pickup will be Monday June 5 and the Oaklands pickup will be Tuesday June 6. The first farm pickups will be Tuesday June 6 or Friday June 9 (depending which day of the week you selected).  We will be in touch before the first pickup to remind you and provide more details.

Referrals = farm $

To encourage new members to sign up and as a thank you for recommending us, we are offering $20 farm credit to new members and the person that referred them.  When registering, include the name of the person that referred you in the “payment options” comment box or send us an email (thelocalfoodbox@gmail.com) to let us know. The farm credit can be used at our farm stand or at the weekly pickups to purchase extra vegetables.  If you are a new member that has already signed up for this season and you were referred by another Local Food Box member please let us know so we can provide you both with credit.

Pickup pods in town

There are currently two options for accessing the Local Food Box in or around Victoria, and both have a few spaces still available. To sign up for a pod pickup location please select the “waiting list” option in the shipping options menu.

Vic West Pickup – Mondays from 6-7 pm at 635 Dominion Rd  (3 spaces available)

Oaklands Pickup – Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30 pm at 2575 Victor Street (2 spaces available)

If you are interested in setting up a new pod in your neighbourhood, get in touch.  For a new pod to be viable there are 3 requirements:

  1. A host pickup location that has easy parking and access, a shaded location for vegetables, and the space must be available on Tuesday or Friday evenings each week from early June to mid October.
  2. At least 8 vegetable box members (we can help try to find members in your area)
  3. A dedicated driver(s) to pick up the boxes at the farm in Metchosin each week and bring them to the pickup location on time.   As a thank you, we will discount the driver the cost of a vegetable box for each delivery.
